General Sport Rules

Conference Rules

Rosters – Rosters must be completely filled out and returned to the sport commissioner by December 20th. If you are notified that your roster is incomplete in any way you will have a one week grace period to correct it and return it to the sport commissioner. If the roster is not returned within the grace period you will forfeit all games until it is received. All coaches whose names appear on the team roster must complete ASEP training. Only coaches whose names appear on the roster are allowed to be on the bench during league games or playoff games (limit of two coaches and one scorekeeper on the bench for any game). If you are going to have anyone on the bench other than players and coaches listed on the team roster, you must notify the sport commissioner prior to the game.

ASEP Classes – ASEP classes will be offered throughout the season but primarily at the beginning of the season. All coaches whose names appear on the roster must be ASEP certified. The deadline for ASEP certification for boy’s basketball is January 10, 2006. Coaches who do not receive ASEP certification by the deadline will not be allowed on the bench during league games or playoff games. If a non-ASEP certified coach is identified as being on the bench during a league game or playoff game after the January 10th deadline, the team forfeits that game.

Zero Tolerance - The S.C.C. has a zero tolerance policy in regards to conduct of players, coaches, and fans, before, during and after conference activities. It is the responsibility of the boy’s basketball coordinator from each school to inform his/her school’s players, coaches and fans of this policy. Detailed information pertaining to behavior and conduct will be found in the S.C.C. Bylaws. Reprisals for inappropriate behavior can include anything from a verbal warning to expulsion from league activities. A Conduct Committee has been set up to review/investigate all allegations of inappropriate behavior and their decision is final.

Movement of Players – All players in boy’s basketball are to be listed on one roster only. Double rostering of players will result in forfeits. Only in a case where a team does not have enough players to play the game can a player be brought in for that game. Any player brought in must be rostered on a S.C.C. team. Only enough players may be added to bring the total players for that gave up to seven. Players who are brought in for that game must not be used as starters, but rather substitutes for players who are tired or in foul trouble. The first option is to bring in a player from the same grade level but a lower division team. If that is not possible then a player from a lower grade of an equal or lower division may be added. Anytime a player is added for a game, the basketball commissioner must be notified prior to the start of that game. Additionally, the head coach from the opposing team must be notified that a player has been added.

Responsibility – The ultimate responsibility for setting the tempo of the game rests with the head coach and assistant coaches. It is up to them to set an example of Good Sportsmanship and Christian Behavior. Verbal or physical attacks directed towards referees, opposing players, opposing coaches, scorekeeper, or fans, before, during or after a conference event will result in immediate disciplinary action by the conference.

Referees – It is in the nature of the game that a coach or fans will at times have a difference of opinion from the referee. On the court, during the game, after the game, or anytime children are present is not the time or place to address these differences. When a coach has a concern as to how a referee handled a particular game, he/she should immediately relay the complaint to his/her coordinator who in turn should address the issue with the referee assigner for that sport. The assigner will investigate the situation and respond to the interested party as to what action has been taken. If a referee receives multiple justifiable complaints, the referee will be prohibited from refereeing future games.

It is the responsibility of the sport coordinator of each school to ensure that all of your coaches are familiar with these rules and all rules that govern sports activities for the Southside Catholic Conference. We recommend that you make copies of these and other rules and distribute them to your coaches prior to the start of the season.

Have a great season.
